Agency Backstory

Knowing the people who know workers’ comp—an edge for Hughes Insurance

Hughes Insurance started working with Summit more than 25 years ago, not knowing it would transform the agency’s approach to workers’ comp. Today, the agency and its clients have an edge, enjoying access to knowledgeable specialists at the forefront of policy design, safety consulting, and claims management.

The outcome is a collaborative relationship—an ease of doing business—that the agency says is unmatched by other insurance companies, and which contributes to steady growth in Hughes’ book of workers’ comp business.

Large public employer ecstatic after switching to Summit

About the Client:

  • Large public entity
  • 32 locations in Louisiana with 3,100 employees
  • Client since 2002 with Hughes Insurance Services, Gonzales, LA
  • Policyholder with Summit since 2022

The Challenge

Client needed responsive safety consulting and claims management know-how.

During the last few years with its previous workers’ comp carrier, this large public institution suffered through an ineffective and unresponsive approach to improving safety and reducing claims. The insurance company kept the policyholder with the same loss prevention rep with whom they had ongoing problems and who failed to provide guidance for essential safety measures.

“Claims management was an issue,” says Bret Hughes, the policyholder’s insurance agent. “Too many claims were not being settled in a timely fashion. In one circumstance, for instance, the policyholder was asking for specific data from its 32 locations to get to the bottom of major, recurring claims issues, but the insurance company was unable or unwilling to provide the info.”

The Solution

Summit jumps in to solve complex problems.

After failed attempts to have these costly issues corrected, Hughes and the client’s management team decided it was time to make a change. Bret consulted the client about the positive outcomes Summit produced for other agency clients, and our decades of experience in correcting safety hazards at the precise source of risk. We then created a customized service plan to provide the ideal frequency of claims reporting and safety consultation visits.

Claims research and analysis led to meaningful success.

Summit’s team discovered that most of the claims were resulting from an overall poor safety mindset. We started by concentrating on four or five of the policyholder’s locations that were experiencing workplace injuries. The greater breakthrough, however, was the discovery that the same hazards existed throughout the organization—not just the sites where injuries had occurred—making this a fixable safety culture problem that we can coach employees to improve. Slip, trip and fall injuries were instead identified in a high percentage of incidents; so Summit is providing safety training in these areas and already seeing a significant reduction in claims.

Severe injuries reduced. Client costs lowered.

“We’ve seen a decrease in the number of severe injuries with this client, which is apparent in the lower loss ratio,” says Summit Business Developer Doug Chiles. “Employees were not wearing the appropriate nonslip shoes, for example, or following proper protocol when maneuvering and reaching for high objects in a workspace. Our Loss Prevention department has helped them implement safety procedures and made a huge difference that should ultimately impact their mod.”

Knowing your client makes all the difference.

At Summit, we understand that knowing workers’ comp is only part of the equation. Knowing your client’s situation and needs make the real difference. The strong collaboration that we’ve already established with this policyholder will continue to grow. “We have quarterly collaborative meetings about the account with Summit,” says Hughes. “Relationships really matter in our business. The positive teamwork and quick access we enjoy with every department at Summit truly makes life easier for us and our clients.”
Headshot of Bret Hughes.

Within three months of taking the account, Summit researched and compiled all the claims data that the client had asked of the previous carrier for more than two years. Our client is ecstatic with Summit’s expertise and responsiveness in correcting claims and loss prevention issues—it’s the smoothest sailing they’ve experienced.
