1. Establish a workplace safety program

By controlling losses and preventing injuries, you can achieve long-term savings. Summit can help you develop a workplace safety program, offer safety assessments, industry-specific safety training, and more. Visit the Safety section of our website for more information.

2. Create a drug-free workplace program

This is an important step in helping maintain employee health and safety and reducing the risk of injuries. Some states even offer a premium credit for having this program. The Safety section of our website offers more information and training materials.

3. Report injuries as soon as possible

The longer you wait to report an injury, the more costs can add up. Delayed medical care often results in the injury worsening and becoming more costly. Also, if an injured employee sees his or her own primary physician first, then later files the injury as a workers’ comp claim, costs are usually higher. Postponing reporting can also increase the chance of litigation. The four ways to report an injury are: Visit the Report an Injury page on our website; call 1-800-762-7811; email the injury report to [email protected]; or fax the injury report to 863-667-1871

4. Have a return-to-work program

Getting your injured employees back on the job as soon as medically appropriate can help you save. A vital component of these programs is transitional duty assignments, which you should have for each employee so they can ease back into work if necessary. With return to work, you can decrease medical costs, reduce the likelihood of legal expenses, and lower training costs. Back2work® is Summit’s return-to-work program—read about it here

5. Investigate incidents to improve safety

Understanding how an accident or near miss occurred can help you prevent it from happening in the future. Even if no one was injured, it’s important to document what happened. We’ve created an easy-to-use incident investigation kit to help you collect the information you need.

6. Communicate throughout a claim

When you report a claim, you and your injured worker will interact with Summit staff members who are trained to make both your experiences easier. Regular communication with the adjuster, injured worker, and the medical provider can help the claim move more quickly and prevent confusion along the way.
